Successful debut for Thomas
DUNMORE – Jarrod Thomas has come a long way in a short time.
Thomas, who joined the Irish Boxing Club three months ago, earned a victory in his first fight on points over Kendall Thomas on April 13 at the Electric City Belt Show in front of a sold out crowd of 650 at the Holiday Inn Scranton East.
Jarrod opened the first round with his jab and landed a nice right upstairs and followed it with a stinging right.
“We worked on that a lot in camp; just jab, jab, right hand,” Jarrod said.
Kendall backed Jarrod into a corner and landed a left but Jarrod fought out with a combination and then landed a right and a straight left to the body.
Jarrod went back to the jab in the second round and then scored with a good right to the body and then connected with a right upstairs with Kendall in the corner.
Kendall tried to press to start the third round but Jarrod answered with a quick left hook with his back against the ropes. After Kendall landed a good straight right, Jarrod connected with a big left hook and a right hook near the end of the round.
“I was just trying to keep my calm, keep working hard,” Jarrod said. “I know I got a little gassed at the end of it but I just pushed through it.”
Cortese delivers vicious KO
DUNMORE – James Cortese said he does not like to fight too aggressive. But you would not know it from the result of his bout on April 13.
Cortese backed Martin Tinto into the corner in the third round of their 156-pound fight and unloaded a vicious combination that knocked Tinto out at the Electric City Belt Show in front of a sold out crowd of 650 at the Holiday Inn Scranton East.
Tinto was aggressive to start the third round and landed a big right. Cortese answered with two thudding left hooks and the second one stunned Tinto and drew an 8-count.
“(Getting the 8-count) eased me up a little bit and I saw coach Gene (Reed) telling me to go after it but you still have to be smart,” Cortese said. “People can still throw punches in there and hurt you as well.”
Cortese backed Tinto into the corner and delivered a huge left-right combination that crumpled Tinto to the mat and stopped the fight.
“I was waiting for him to leave himself open,” Cortese said. “I don't like to fight too aggressive; I like to counter and once I saw the opening I went to finish the job.”
Both boxers traded heavy shots in the first round and Tinto started the second round with a big left and followed it with a right. Cortese answered with a sweeping left hook and scored a combination with Tinto in the corner.
Barrett bounces back
DUNMORE - Just three fights into his amateur boxing career, Nathan Barrett has already experienced quite a bit.
Barrett's debut came in the state Golden Gloves tournament and a win sent him to the state championship bout. The state final did not go his way but on April 13, he checked off another box on his journey: how to bounce back from a loss.
Barrett came out on top in a back-and-forth fight with Mackey Demarco, earning a victory on points in a 139-pound fight at the Electric City Belt Show in front of a sold out crowd of 650 at the Holiday Inn Scranton East.
Demarco was very aggressive, especially early on as Barrett tried to work in his jab. Barrett was able to match his opponent's aggressiveness as the pair traded shots along the ropes. Barrett followed up the exchange with a good straight right hand and Demarco answered with a left.
Demarco was swinging wildly to open the second round and Barrett capitalized with a right hand and then scored with an uppercut.
“Coming in, 'go up the middle' is what they told me,” Barrett said. “That's the uppercut.”
Demarco landed a big left hook later in the second round but Barrett answered with a good straight right. After another strong left from Demarco, Barrett landed a solid left-right combination upstairs.
Barrett caught Demarco coming in with a right hand in the third round and later landed another good uppercut.
“Motivation came from my coaches,” Barrett said. “No one wants to go through losses but you have to take it. So bounce back the next week and now we got that down.”
